Specialty Expressions: Apocynum

Expressions Domain Definition
Apocynum androsaemifolium Aerospace Spreading dogbane is a native herb found across Canada. This plant has been reported to cause serious poisoning potential in cattle, horses, and sheep after ingestion (Johnson and Archer 1922). This information was credited to a report from the Arizona Experiment Station and to an article that was erroneously stated to be about Apocynum. However, that article actually concerned Nerium (oleander) poisoning of livestock. Therefore, the various signs and symptoms attributed to dogbane poisoning since 1922 are usually based on this mistake (Kingsbury 1959). Experimental evidence shows that spreading dogbane contains apocynamarin, a cardiac glycoside, as well as other glycosides and resins. These chemicals have caused sickness and death when administered cats and dogs. The root of spreading dogbane has been used for medicinal purposes. Excessive doses of the extracts apparently cause sickness and death in humans (Fleurbec 1981). General symptoms of poisoning: 1- Cats: a- blood pressure, high; and b- death; 2- Dogs: a- death; and b- vomiting; and 3- Humans and Horses: a- convulsions; b- death; c- diarrhea; d- sweating; e- urination, frequent; and f- vomiting. Apocynum cannabinum Aerospace Hemp dogbane is a native plant found across Canada. Fuller and McClintock (1986) report that two horses died after ingesting alfalfa hay that contained large quantities of hemp dogbane. The tops of the plants (up to 1 m tall) were found in the hay. Hemp dogbane contains the chemical cymarin (a cardiac glycoside). Joubert (1989) lists this chemical under "Apocynum camrabinum," which is a typographical error and should read "Apocynum cannabinum." Uses

Apocynum cannabinum was used as a source of fiber by Native Americans. And Apocynum venetum (Chinese:羅布麻) is used as the herbal tea in China.[citation needed] Dogbane contains cymarin, a cardiogenic toxin that causes cardiac arrhythmia in humans. Cymarin is used in modern medicine in copiously formulated pharmaceutical preparations used to treat a variety of tumors.
