The American mastodon (Mammut americanum) was a North American mastodon known from fossils found ranging from present-day Alaska (in the northwest) to New England (in the northeast) and from Florida (in the southeast) to southern California (in the southwest). It lived from about 3.7 million years ago and became extinct around 8,000 years B.C.
