Antiquities Allium. Garlic, said by Horace (Epod. iii. 4) to be fit only for reapers. It was a favorite food with Roman soldiers and sailors, and with the Egyptians. (references)
Botanical Presently unknown in the wild, onion has been used more than 4000 years. Garlic, A.sativum L., is regarded as antiseptic, bactericidal, carminative, cordiment, diaphoretic, emmenagogic, expectorant, rubefacient, stimulant, stomachic, and vermifugal; it is used in home remedies for bronchitis, colds, earaches, hysteria, nervous conditions and toothache. The juice can be used to mend china. Oil from the seeds is applied externally to rheumatics. Garlic oil, mixed with cebo de Cuba, is used like a mustard plaster in Panama. Onions are eaten raw or cooked and used for seasoning pickles, curries, stews, "sancochos", etc. (!). They are used as a home remedy for bronchitis, catarrh, colic, dropsy, fever, flatulence, hangover, and scurvy. They are regarded as aphrodisiac, carminative, emmenagogic, and soporific when used internally. They are used externally to treat earaches and insect bites. Maje Choco women, having difficulty delivering, receive a stomach massage with cooking oil mixed with onion, garlic, oregano, and hierba poleo (perhaps Kallstroemia). Some Indians believe they also repel snakes; the odor repels some humans, so it might actually repel snakes. My Cuna guide from Nargana rubbed his legs with sliced onion to "prevent snakebite" (!). In Western Panama, onions are placed in the eaves of bohiuos as a bat repellent (!); a bat and snake repellent would be useful morale builders for the newcomer in Panama. (references)
Health A genus of liliaceous herbs containing onions (Allium cepa), garlic (Allium sativum), and others; many produce pungent, often bacteriostatic and physiologically active compounds and are used as food, condiment, and medicament, the latter in traditional medicine. (references)
Wikipedic Allium is the onion genus with about 1250 species, usually classified in its own family Alliaceae. Some botanists used to classify it in the lily family (Liliaceae). (references)

Specialty Expressions: Allium

Expressions Domain Definition
Allium canadense Aerospace Wild onion is a native herb found in parts of eastern Canada. This plant can cause gastroenteritis in young children who ingest parts of this plant. Chronic ingestion of the bulbs reduces iodine uptake by the thyroid gland, which can lead to problems. No specific treatment is suggested other than to prevent dehydration (Lampe and McCann 1985). Livestock have also been poisoned by ingesting wild onions, and some have died (Pipal 1918). Horses have developed hemolytic anemia from ingesting wild onion leaves (Scoggan 1989). The three onion species (Allium spp.) mentioned in this information system contain S-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (SMCO), which is a sulfur- containing alpha-amino acid. The empirical formula is C4-H9-O3-NS. The common garden onion (A. cepa) contains the following: 1- 100 mg/kg wet weight of SMCO in the leaves; and 2- 1600 mg/kg wet weight of SMCO in the bulbs (Benevenga et al. 1989). General symptoms of poisoning: 1- Cattle: a- breathing, rapid; b- death; c- gastroenteritis; d- heart rate, elevated; e- Heinz bodies; f- recumbency; and g- weakness. (references)
Allium cepa Aerospace Onion has caused hemolytic anemia in livestock including cattle, horses, and experimentally in sheep. Death can occur in severe cases. The formation of Heinz bodies in the red blood cells is a common occurrence. Heinz bodies consist of a precipitate, denatured hemoglobin caused by oxidant attack (Hutchinson 1977). Onions (Allium spp.) contain various toxins that can cause problems. N-propyl disulphide, an alkaloid, has been implicated as the toxic chemical (Hutchinson 1977). More recent studies have shown that S-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (SMCO) is involved in forming Heinz bodies and hemolytic anemia. This chemical is less toxic in nonruminant animals (Benevenga et al. 1989). (Note: calcium oxalate crystals have been found in the dry outer skin or scale leaves of this plant (Sarma and Terp 1980)). Garlic (Allium sativum) is a cultivated plant grown for its bulbs. General symptoms of poisoning: 1- Cattle: a- death; and b- Heinz bodies; 2- Horses: a- anemia; b- breath, onion odor of; c- breathing, rapid; d- death; e- icterus; and f- weight loss; and 3- Sheep: anemia. (references)
Allium sativum Aerospace Human allergy to garlic dust has been documented by Lybarger et al. 1982. Ingesting garlic leaves can also cause allergic reactions. General symptoms of poisoning: 1- Humans: a- dyspnea; and b- wheezing. (references)
Allium schoenoprasum Aerospace Horses have been poisoned in Japan by ingesting the leaves of chive in early spring. Chives have escaped cultivation and have been naturalized in various parts of Canada, but the plants are not abundant. General symptoms of poisoning: 1- Horses: a- hemoglobinuria; and b- icterus. Allium is the onion genus, with about 1250 species, making it one of the largest plant genera in the world. They are perennial bulbous plants that produce chemical compounds (mostly cystein sulfoxide) that give them a characteristic onion or garlic taste and odor, and many are used as food plants. Allium is classified in family Alliaceae although some classifications have included it in the lily family (Liliaceae).

Allium species occur in temperate climates of the northern hemisphere, except for a few species occurring in Chile (as Allium juncifolium), Brazil (Allium sellovianum) or tropical Africa (Allium spathaceum). They can vary in height between 5 cm and 150 cm. The flowers form an umbel at the top of a leafless stalk. The bulbs vary in size between species, from very small (around 2–3 mm in diameter) to rather big (8–10 cm). Some species (such as Welsh onion, A. fistulosum) develop thickened leaf-bases rather than forming bulbs as such.

Most bulbous alliums increase by forming little bulbs or "offsets" around the old one, as well as by seed. Several species can form many bulbils (tiny bulbs) in the flowerhead; in the so-called "tree onion" (A. cepa Proliferum Group) the bulbils are few, but large enough to be used for pickling.

Members of the genus include many valued vegetables such as onions, shallots, leeks and herbs such as garlic and chives. A strong "oniony" odor is characteristic of the whole genus, but not all members are equally flavorful.

Some Allium species, including A. cristophii and A. giganteum, are used as border plants for their flowers, and their "architectural" qualities. Several hybrids have been bred, or selected, with rich purple flowers. Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' is one of the most popular and has been given an Award of Garden Merit (H4). By contrast, other species (such as the invasive Allium triquetrum) can become troublesome garden weeds.

Various Allium species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera including Cabbage Moth, Common Swift moth (recorded on garlic), Garden Dart moth, Large Yellow Underwing moth, Nutmeg moth, Setaceous Hebrew Character moth, Turnip Moth and Schinia rosea, a moth which feeds exclusively on Allium sp.
