Expressions Definition
Aleutian Island earthquake Aleutian Island earthquake was an earthquake near the Aleutian Islands on April 1, 1946, and was followed by a Pacific-wide tsunami wave. The earthquake was a magnitude 7.8, with its epicenter at 52.8°N, 163.5°W, and focal depth of 25 km. It resulted in 165 casualties and over $26 million in damages. It prompted the creation of the Seismic Sea Wave Warning System, which later became the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in 1949. (references)

Aleutian Range The Aleutian Range is the mountain range of the Alaska Peninsula in southeast Alaska. It is especially notable for its large number of active volcanoes. The mainland part of the range is about 1000 km (600 mi) long; the Aleutian Islands are (geologically) a partially submerged western extension of the range that stretches for another 1,600 km (1000 mi). (references)
Aleutian Tern The Aleutian Tern (Sterna aleutica) is a seabird of the tern family Sternidae. (references)
Aleutian Trench The Aleutian Trench is an oceanic trench in the Earth's crust. It is classified as a marginal trench in the east but is termed an island arc west of Alaska. The trench extends for 3,400 km from the northern end of the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench to the Gulf of Alaska, marking the boundary where two tectonic plates meet, a subduction zone where the Pacific Plate is being subducted under the North American Plate. (references)
Battle of the Aleutian Islands The Battle of the Aleutian Islands was a struggle over the Aleutian Islands, part of Alaska, in the Pacific campaign of World War II. A small Japanese force occupied the islands of Attu and Kiska but the remoteness of the islands and the difficulties of weather and terrain meant that it took nearly a year for a large American force to eject them. The islands had no strategic value for either side: the invasion was launched by the Japanese as an unsuccessful diversion from the battle of Midway. America feared that the islands would be used as bases from which to launch aerial assaults against the West Coast, and it became a matter of national pride to expel the first invaders to set foot on American soil since the War of 1812. But Japan lacked both a long-range bomber and the resources to establish and operate an airbase in the Aleutians. (references)
