Expressions Definition
Aether (classical element) The aether (also spelled ether) is a concept, historically, used in science (as a medium) and philosophy (as a substance). The aether was believed to be the substance which filled all of space. Aristotle included it as a fifth element on the principle that nature abhorred a vacuum. Aether was also called "Quintessence". (references)
Aether (fictional planet) Planet Aether is the fractured planet that is the setting for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for the Nintendo GameCube. It is located in the Dasha region, and is home to two warring races, the Luminoth of Aether and the Ing of Dark Aether. Additionally, in Greek mythology, "æther" was a substance that was proposed to fill all of the universe's space. (references)
Aether (mythology) Aether ("upper air"), in Greek mythology, was the personification of the "upper sky", space and heaven. He is the pure, upper air that the gods breathe, as opposed to "aer", which mortals breathed. In Hesiod's Theogony he was the son of Erebus and Nyx, and brother of Hemera, both noted in passing in Cicero's De Natura deorum. He is the soul of the world and all life emanates from him. The aether was also known as Zeus' defensive wall; the bound that locked Tartaros from the cosmos. (references)
Aether and general relativity Under general relativity, the gravitational field parameters are supposed not just to 'modify' underlying pre-existing distances and times, but to define them, completely. Separation between objects is then not an independent mathematical property as it is with special relativity, the "quantity of space" between two objects is instead entirely defined by the properties of the region's gravitational field. (references)
Aether drag hypothesis The aether drag hypothesis was an early attempt to explain the way experiments such as Arago's experiment showed that the speed of light is constant. The aether drag hypothesis is now considered to be incorrect by mainstream science. (references)
Aether theories In natural philosophy, aether (a.k.a. "ether") might be considered "the stuff of space", or "the medium" (lit: "that which is between") that carries signals between objects separated by vacuum. "The aether" was sometimes considered to be "the fifth element" (see: "quintessence"), in addition to Earth, Air, Fire and Water. (references)
Newton's aether model In modern language, we can say that Newton's aether model was an early attempt at a "geometrical" theory of gravity, or a curved-space model. (references)
Timeline of Luminiferous Aether The Timeline of Luminiferous Aether begins in the late 19th century with the concept of the aether ("light-bearing aether"), or ether, as a medium for electromagnetic propagation. (references)
