Definition

The manini (scientific name Acanthurus triostegus) is a small fish about 5 inches long. It is yellow with black stripes on its side like a zebra. Its resemblance to a prisoner’s uniform gave it the nickname “convict tang”. Manini is one of the favorite food dishes found everywhere in shallow waters around the islands of Samoa and the Hawaiian islands. Like Alogo, the manini belong to the family of surgeon fish, because of their sharp blades by their tail fin. Even though they have this weapon, they do not use it much. (references)

Acanthurus is the type genus of the family Acanthuridae.

Ancanthurus refers to a genus of marine tropical reef fishes which are members of the family Aacanthuridae, commonly called acanthurids, surgeonfishes, or tangs. They are characterized by having pairs of defensive knives (thus surgeonfishes) at base of their tails. Snorkelers in Hawaiian waters are sure to encounter the Islands most beloved fish, the manini, or Acanthurus triostegus, (previously A. sandvicensis), often called the convict tang.
