"Anticipating" was the fourth French single to be released from Britney Spears' third studio album Britney, While "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was released as the fourth European single. In Brazil, "Anticipating" was released in 2003 during the Brazilian summer. The track was the sixth single to be taken from Britney in Brazil due to its success in the country.

The song was written and produced by Brian Kierulf, Josh Schwartz, as well as by Britney: it is her first single that has her own writing credits. The track was featured in a commercial for the Toyota Vios. Britney explained the song as, it was okay to go out with your friends and have fun, but something always reminds you of your last boyfriend. Because of that, you're not having fun anymore. "I'll be anticipating, this is our song they're playing. I wanna ride with you, you're feeling this right, let's do this tonight."

Having no time to shoot a proper music video for "Anticipating", the performance from the Live from Las Vegas concert was used in place of a video. This is the very first music video of Spears in which she performs live. In it, Britney and her female performers dance around the stage in colorful outfits. Then, Britney hops into a pink car and encourages the audience to sing along. The video was originally intended to be an animated video, featuring a cartoon Britney cruising around Paris (because of its release in France) in a convertible.
