| Type 94 75 mm Mountain Gun |
The Type 94 75mm Mountain Gun entered service in 1935, and was used extensively by the Japanese during the Second world war. It is a light mountain gun, which breaks down into 11 units, the heaviest of which weighs 210 pounds (95 kg). It superceded the Type 41 75mm Mountain Gun and became the standard Japanese pack artillery piece. The weapon is normally transported by 6 pack horses, but in can be carried by 18 men, though during the battle on Bougainville because of the tough terrain it was carried by 41 men. It has a long split-trail, hydro-pneumatic recoil mechanism based on French Schneider designs, and a horizontal sliding breechblock based on German Krupp designs [http://users.belgacom.net/artillery/artillerie/5446.html]. The crew is partially protected by a gun shield which is made of 1/8-inch (3 mm) thick armor plate. It can be disassembled in 3 to 5 minutes and assembled in 10. (references) |
