| Lotus-Cosworth 49 |
The Lotus-Cosworth 49 was a work of art. It was, In my opinion the coolest F1 Car of the 60's. It had a Ford Cosworth DFV (Double Four Valve) engine, built by Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin. It won it's first race in the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix. But while it was fast, it was fragile, like many other cars built by Colin Chapman. It had teething problems in it's first race for Graham Hill, and It had plug trouble at the Belgian Grand Prix, held on the 8.76 mile (14.73 kilometer) Spa-Francorchamps circuit for Jim Clark. Jim Clark and Graham Hill fell victim to the teething problem at the French Grand prix, held at the BugattiCircuit, in the track that holds the Le Mans 24 hours race]. Jack Brabham won it. Then Jim Clark ran out of gas at Monza, home of the Italian Grand Prix. But in 1968, Jimmy won his last F1 Championship race at Kyalami in South Africa. He also won the Tasman Series, held in Australia. Graham Hill won the Monaco GP in the "Duck Tailed" version. He did the Same in 1969. Jochen Rindt, the only posthumous World champ won at Watkins Glen, New York in 1969, and the Monaco GP in 1970, thus ending the Lotus 49's career. (references) |
