| 155th Street (IRT Ninth Avenue Line station) | The demolition of the 9th Avenue el in the late 1930's resulted in the razing of all stations from the Battery to 155th street. The Ninth Avenue line was Manhattan's first elevated Railway (opening in 1870). A remnant was left in place to provide transportation from the Bronx Woodlawn Line to the Polo Grounds. It was called the Polo Grounds Shuttle running from 167th Street (Jerome Ave. in the Bronx) also stopping at Anderson and Jerome Ave., Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx to 155th Street and 8th Avenue, Manhattan, the last stop at the Polo Grounds. The Giants moved to San Francisco at the close of the 1957 season. Because of dwindling patronage on both the el and the Putnam Division of the Harlem Line, service was discontinued. Operations ceased at 11:59 PM on Sunday, August 31. The spur was demolished from the 167th Street connection to 155th Street station. Thus ended the era of the elevated railway in Manhattan.
