A term used in connection with the sampling of human populations to describe the situation where a member of the sample responds to a question from the investigator in the way which is believed to please the investigator, rather than giving an accurate reply. The respondent if often not conscious of deliberate falsehood, which usually adds to he difficulty of countering the bias to which the effect gives rise. Source: European Union. (references)
