The spectrum of an ion. The degree of ionization, or order of the spectrum, is indicated by a Roman numeral following the Symbol for the element. The first spark spectrum is indicated by II, the second by III, and so on. Thus Fe IV indicates the spectrum of an iron atom which has lost three electrons. See arc spectrum. (references)
