An army unit consisting of mounted soldiers are commonly known as cavalry. Cavalry fight from the backs of their mounts, which most often are horses or camels. Infantry travelling by horse and fighting on foot are instead known as dragoons.
Light Cavalry - Heavy Cavalry
Historically, cavalry was divided into light and heavy cavalry. The difference between them was primarily how much armour is worn by the soldiers, and thus how powerful their mounts had to be in order to sustain the burden.
Origins
Before the Iron Age, the role of cavalry on the battlefield was largely performed by light chariots. The power of mobility given by mounted units was recognised early on, but was offset by the difficulty of raising large forces and by the inability of horses (then mostly small) to carry heavy armour. In the armies of the Greeks and Romans it played a relatively small role, but was more important in the countries to the east, and horse archers were dominant on the vast Russian steppes for thousands of years. The decline of Roman infrastructure made it more and more difficult to field large infantry forces, and during the second and third centuries cavalry began to take a more dominant role on the battlefield, also in part made possible by the appearance of new larger breeds of horses. The appearance of the stirrup allowed for the appearance of the heavy mounted knights, which were employed as shock troops, whereas earlier cavalry had to be consigned to the flanks. Knights remained dominant in western Europe until the rise of pikemen and longbowmen, and then musketeers, relegated cavalry again to a supporting role. In eastern Europe cavalry remained important much longer and dominated the battlefield until the early 1600s, because of long distances and better tactics. From time to time eastern cavalry units met western armies, with the former usually defeating the latter. After defeat usually westerners quickly adopted eastern cavalry tactics; one of the most famous examples is Gustavus Adolphus.
Demise
In the 20th century the advent of modern vehicles with effective engines, such as tanks, rendered cavalry obsolete. The last cavalry charges in modern warfare were seen in the Second World War.

A mount may refer to a horse or other animal or bird intended for riding. See horse, camel, elephant, Garuda.
A mount is an attachment point for equipment to vehicles. Mounts are usually made to enable the object mounted there to be moved in relation to the vehicle, but still remain affixed. Notable uses of mounts are for weapons and cameras, where the mount instead of the operator supports the weight of the equipment. See also turret, hard point and pintel.
Mount is a position in grappling, where one person sits on the chest of another. This is a favourable position to the uppermost combatant, as he may deliver strikes to the head of the other with ease. In submission fighting, this position often yields victory for the uppermost person unless the disadvantaged party makes a reversal in short order.
As both a noun and a verb, mount is used in gymnastics to go from the ground to the gymnastic apparatus (e.g. balance beam, parallel bars).
The word mount is also a word for mountain, and is used in names such as Mount Ararat.
In computing, to mount a drive is to ready the device and make the filesystem ready for use by the operating system and the user. Devices may be mounted automatically (the term for this is generally called automounting), this depends on the operating system.
