Literature | Five or the pentad, the great mystic number, being the sum of 2 + 3, the first even and first odd compound. Unity is God alone, i.e. without creation. Two is diversity, and three (being 1 + 2) is the compound of unity and diversity, or the two principles in operation since creation, and representing all the powers of nature. Five (5) is the natural number following four and preceding six.
Five in mathematics
- Five is the third smallest prime number, the next is seven. Because it can be written as 2^(2^1)+1, five is classified as a Fermat prime. Five is the only prime number to end in the digit 5, because all other numbers written with a 5 in the ones place under the decimal system are multiples of five.
- The number 5 is a Fibonacci number, being 2 plus 3. The next Fibonacci number is 8.
- Five is a factor of 10, so fractions with 5 in the denominator do not yield infinite decimal expansions, unlike most other primes. When written in the decimal system, all multiples of 5 will end in either 5 or 0.
- While polynomial equations of degree 4 and below can be solved with radicals, equations of degree 5 and higher cannot generally be so solved. This is the Abel-Ruffini theorem. This is related to the fact that the symmetric group Sn is a solvable group for n ≤ 4 and not solvable for n ≥ 5.
- While all graphs with 4 or fewer vertices are planar, there exists a graph with 5 vertices which is not planar: K5, the complete graph with 5 vertices.
- Five is also the number of Platonic solids.
- Five is the answer to the question asked at the very end of the mathematics quiz show in the movie Little Man Tate. (Our young protagonist blurts out the answer, but the host mishears it as being the answer from the contestant to whom the question is posed, and declares him the winner.)
Five in numbering systems
- In binary code five is 101
- In ternary code five is 12
- In quaternary numeral system code five is 11
- In quinary five is 10; in senary code and all codes above (such as octal, decimal and hexadecimal) five is 5.
- The Roman numeral for five is V, which comes from a representation of an outstretched hand.
- In Greek alphabet, ε (epsilon) has numerical value of 5.

- In Cantonese, five sounds like the word "not" (symbol 唔). So when five appears in front of a lucky number, e.g. 58, the result is considered unlucky.

- Five is also the number of dots in a quincunx.

Five formerly known as Channel 5 is the United Kingdom's fifth terrestrial TV Channel. The British frequency plan only allowed for four channels to be transmitted using analog terrestrial transmitters, so it was very difficult to allocate frequencies for the new channel before its launch in March 1997 -- UHF channel 37 was allocated in many areas, which meant that large numbers of domestic videorecorders (which output on that channel) had to be retuned at the new company's expense. Unlike the other four analog British television channels, many areas remain unable to receive it via analog terrestrial broadcasts, notably the south coast. The channel is available on all digital platforms (Sky Television satellite, and Freeview digital terrestrial, also most cable operators). In 2002, Channel 5 had a 6.3% share of individual television viewing in the UK. A pentaquark is a subatomic particle consisting of a group of five quarks (compared to three quarks in normal baryons and two in mesons). A pentaquark is composed of four quarks and one anti-quark. Hence it has baryon number 1. It has therefore been assigned a new particle classification, called an exotic baryon. Several experiments have shown that a pentaquark exists with a mass of about 1540 MeV.
The existence of pentaquarks was originally hypothesized by Maxim Polyakov, Dmitri Diakonov, and Victor Petrov at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute in Russia in 1997, but their theory was met with skepticism.
The existence of pentaquarks was proven in July 2003 by experiments run by Takashi Nakano of Osaka University, Japan, and by Ken Hicks at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility {Jefferson Lab} in Newport News, Virginia. Their experiments caused a high-energy gamma ray to interact with a neutron, creating a meson and a pentaquark. However, the pentaquark only survived for about 10-20 seconds before decayinging into a meson and a neutron.
