Tuskegee is a city located in Macon County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 11,846. The city is the county seat of Macon County,and is known as the home of Tuskegee University.

Geography

Tuskegee is located at 32°25'53" North, 85°42'24" West (32.431506, -85.706781)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.7 km² (15.7 mi²). 40.1 km² (15.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,846 people, 4,169 households, and 2,326 families residing in the city. The population density is 295.7/km² (765.7/mi²). There are 5,101 housing units at an average density of 127.3/km² (329.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 2.59% White, 95.48% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,169 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 22.6% are married couples living together, 29.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.2% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 25.4% from 18 to 24, 19.9% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 80.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $18,889, and the median income for a family is $26,862. Males have a median income of $23,333 versus $22,951 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,340. 35.7% of the population and 30.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 44.1% are under the age of 18 and 26.3% are 65 or older.
