Specialty Definition: ITER

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

ITER is a proposed international experiment designed to show the scientific and technological feasability of a fusion power reactor. The experiment would be a tokamak, and would be larger than any previously constructed magnetic confinement device.

ITER originally stood for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, the name was also chosen because iter means 'the way' in Italian.

Ideally, it is proposed to run ITER in parallel with a materials test facility, the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility or IFMIR, and to follow both of these by a demonstration power plant, DEMO. A prototype plant to follow DEMO would be the first to produce commercial power.
