Dalton's Law

Definitions: Dalton's Law

Dalton's Law

Noun

1. (chemistry) law stating that when two elements can combine to form more than one compound the amounts of one of them that combines with a fixed amount of the other will exhibit a simple multiple relation.

2. (chemistry and physics) law stating that the pressure exerted by a mixture of gases equals the sum of the partial pressures of the gases in the mixture; the pressure of a gas in a mixture equals the pressure it would exert if it occupied the same volume alone at the same temperature.

Specialty Definition: Dalton's law

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Dalton's Law can be stated as follows:

The total pressure exerted by a gaseous mixture is equal to the sum of the pressures that would be exerted by the gases if they alone were present and occupied the total volume.

In mathematics this would mean the pressure P of a mixture of n gases can be defined as the summation

P = p(1) + p(2) + ... + p(n)

This means that each gas in a mixture acts as if the other gas is not present and that the pressures that come from each gas can simply be added. It is assumed that the gases do not react with each other.
