According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.
There are 1,214 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 14.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 84.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $22,670, and the median income for a family is $27,872. Males have a median income of $29,545 versus $18,875 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,649. 27.1% of the population and 25.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 39.0% are under the age of 18 and 18.9% are 65 or older.
