AHUIMANU, HAWAII

'Āhuimanu is a town located in the City & County of Honolulu, in the District of Ko'olaupoko on the island of O'ahu. In Hawaiian 'āhui-manu means "cluster of birds".

'Āhuimanu is spread out beneath the steep windward pali (cliff face) of the Ko'olau mountain over a low ridge from He'eia Kea. Thus this area is mostly inland and not directly on Kāne'ohe Bay. However, one neighborhood spreads over the ridge and along Kamehameha Highway where there is private access to the Bay shore. Proximity to the mountain gives the town a generally wet climate. As of the 2000 Census, this largely residential area had a total population of 8,506. A small commercial mall is located here across the highway from the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, a large cemetery noted for its Byodo-in Temple.

Geography

'Āhuimanu is located at 21°26'36" North, 157°50'24" West (21.443273, -157.840111)¹. The towns closest to 'Āhuimanu are He'eia and Kāne'ohe to the south along State Rte 83 (Kahekili Hwy) and Kahalu'u with which it merges to the north.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census ², there were 8,506 people, 2,591 households, and 2,204 families residing in Āhuimanu. The population density was 1,834.7/km² (4,745.1/mi²). There were 2,681 housing units at an average density of 578.3/km² (1,495.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 22.27% White, 0.95% African American, 0.14% Native American, 34.72% Asian, 9.85% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 31.41% from two or more races. 8.12% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,591 households out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.9% were non-families. 10.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.28 and the average family size was 3.51.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $71,732, and the median income for a family was $74,788. Males had a median income of $47,910 versus $37,929 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,381. 3.9% of the population and 2.8% of families were below the poverty line.
