Carmine is a city located in Fayette County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 228.

Carmine, or Carmine Lake, or Crimson, or Cochineal is also a name for crimson colour dye, made from cochineal insects.

Geography

Carmine is located at 30°8'57" North, 96°41'18" West (30.149059, -96.688420)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 228 people, 91 households, and 60 families residing in the city. The population density is 53.4/km² (138.4/mi²). There are 118 housing units at an average density of 27.6/km² (71.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.35% White, 1.75% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.14% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 11.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 91 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% are married couples living together, 4.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 78.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,396, and the median income for a family is $49,375. Males have a median income of $30,625 versus $29,063 for females. The per capita income for the city is $34,614. 14.7% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.7% are under the age of 18 and 18.9% are 65 or older.
