Alta Vista is a city located in Chickasaw County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 286.

Geography


Alta Vista is located at 43°11'57" North, 92°24'57" West (43.199041, -92.415780)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 286 people, 125 households, and 75 families residing in the city. The population density is 145.3/km² (378.5/mi²). There are 131 housing units at an average density of 66.6/km² (173.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 125 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.93. In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,786, and the median income for a family is $39,464. Males have a median income of $24,167 versus $22,045 for females. There are 190 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.90. In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 113.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,159, and the median income for a family is $38,542. Males have a median income of $29,167 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,885. 9.9% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.5% are under the age of 18 and 11.4% are 65 or older.
