A cell wall is a more or less solid layer surrounding a cell. They are found in most bacteria, fungi, plants, and algae. Animals and most other protists have cell membranes without surrounding cell walls.
Plant cell walls
Plant cell walls have two main functions: to provide rigidity for the cell, and to prevent expansion when water enters the cell. Made of insoluble cellulose fibres meshed in to a matrix of carbohydrates called pectates and hemicelluloses, they give the plant strength and support. The cell wall is generally permeable to anything entering the cell in solution unless impregnated with lignin in wood or suberin in cork tissue to produce wood.The primary cell wall, built by the plant first, is composed of cellulose microfibrils aligned at all angles. Microfibrils are held together by hydrogen bonds to provide a high tensile strength. After the maximum size necessary has been reached, a secondary wall is constructed below. Unlike the primary wall, the microfibrils are aligned mostly in the same direction, and with each additional layer the orientation changes slightly.
Cell walls of neighbouring cells are held together by a shared gelatinous membrane called the middle lamella, which contains magnesium and calcium pectates (salts of pectic acid).
Bacterial cell walls
Cell walls of bacteria are primarily used for protection against hostile envorinments or, in the case of pathogenic bacteria, against the immune system of the host. They contain peptidoglycan, which can be made visible in Gram-positive bacteria by Gram staining. The cell walls of bacteria are also vital for containing the high osmotic pressure inside bacterial cells caused by the high concentration of solutes in the cytoplasm, which can often be as high as 15 atmospheres. Many antibiotics, including penicillin and its derivatives, target the cell wall of bacteria.
Fungal cell walls
The cell walls of fungal cells are composed of chitin, the same carbohydrate that gives strength to the exoskeletons of insects. They serve a similar purpose to those of plant cells, giving fungal cells rigidity and strength to hold their shapes.

Defensive walls were common from the ancient period into the medieval period. Generally, these are referred to as city walls, although there were also walls, such as the Great Wall of China and the Atlantic Wall, which extended far beyond the borders of a city and were used to enclose vast regions.City walls were still occasionally used as late as the 19th Century although by this time they were generally of wood (rather than stone) construction and used only around small frontier settlements. City walls also had towers and were frequently surrounded by trenches.
The practice of building these massive walls had been developed sometime before the rise of the Sumerian Empire and was connected with the rise of city-states.
Oftentimes the walls proved impenetrable to attacking armies which then laid siege to the city.
Within walled cities, the poor and "noxious trades" were generally located near or outside the walls.
China
Chinese cities occasionally have remnants of city walls that were built in the Ming Dynasty and designed to withstand artillery bombardment. Chinese cities generally outgrew their walls, which fell into disrepair in the Qing dynasty. The walls of Xian are still well-preserved.

Walled villages can still be found in Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Larry Wall is the developer of the Perl programming language. Wall is also known as the original author of the rn Usenet software, and the nearly universally used patch. He has won the IOCCC twice, and was the recipient of the first Free Software Foundation award for the Advancement of Free Software in 1998.
Beyond his technical skills, Wall is known for his wit and often ironic sense of humor which he displays in the comments to his source code or on Usenet (e.g. "We all agree on the necessity of compromise. We just can't agree on when it's necessary to compromise")
Larry Wall is a linguist by trade, which helped him with his book writing. He is the co-author of Programming Perl (often called the Camel Book)(preview online), which is the definitive resource for Perl programmers. He also edited books such as the Perl Cookbook (preview online: 2nd edition 1st edition). All of the books that he edited or co-wrote are published by O'Reilly.

A wall is a usually solid structure that separates space in buildings into rooms, or protects or delineates a space in the open air. Walls have two main purposes: to support roofs and ceilings, and to divide space, providing security against intrusion and weather.Before the invention of artillery, many European cities had protective walls. Since they are no longer relevant for defense, the cities have grown beyond their walls, and many of the walls have been torn down.
The term "the Wall" frequently referred to the Berlin Wall, erected during the Cold War, which fell in 1989.

Wall is located at 40°23'36" North, 79°47'16" West (40.393468, -79.787692)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 727 people, 324 households, and 197 families residing in the borough. The population density is 637.9/km² (1,641.0/mi²). There are 363 housing units at an average density of 318.5/km² (819.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 97.25% White, 2.06% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 324 households out of which 22.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.84. In the borough the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $26,595, and the median income for a family is $32,500. Males have a median income of $25,500 versus $23,333 for females.
