Occupations

Controls equipment to increase strength of nitric acid, used in making TNT and nitroglycerin: Regulates flow of sulfuric acid and weak nitric acid into mixing tank and controls flow of steam, water, air, and mixed acids through dehydrating tower, absorption tower, bleaching tower, still, and condenser to produce concentrated nitric acid meeting plant standard. Monitors thermometers and pressure gauges and adjusts valves to maintain specified temperature and pressure in each unit. Takes samples of product for laboratory analysis or tests acid strength, using pH meter. Records instrument readings in shift log. (references)
