Satire

OUT-:OF:-:DOORS:, n. That part of one's environment upon which no government has been able to collect taxes. Chiefly useful to inspire poets. I climbed to the top of a mountain one day To see the sun setting in glory, And I thought, as I looked at his vanishing ray, Of a perfectly splendid story. 'Twas about an old man and the ass he bestrode Till the strength of the beast was o'ertested; Then the man would carry him miles on the road Till Neddy was pretty well rested. The moon rising solemnly over the crest Of the hills to the east of my station Displayed her broad disk to the darkening west Like a visible new creation. And I thought of a joke (and I laughed till I cried) Of an idle young woman who tarried About a church-door for a look at the bride, Although 'twas herself that was married. To poets all Nature is pregnant with grand Ideas -- with thought and emotion. I pity the dunces who don't understand The speech of earth, heaven and ocean. Stromboli Smith. "Thon out of heaven's benediction comest
To the warm sun."

To have it out. To contest either physically or verbally with another to the utmost of one's ability; as, "I mean to have it out with him one of these days;" "I had it out with him"- i.e. "I spoke my mind freely and without reserve." Out (poker)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In a poker game with more than one betting round, before the final card is dealt, any unseen card that will improve your hand to one that is likely to win is called an out. Knowing the number of outs you have is an important part of poker strategy. For example in draw poker, if you draw one card holding four diamonds, hoping for a flush, you have nine outs (there are 13 diamonds in the deck, and you've seen four of them). If you have two small pair, and you believe that it will be necessary for you to make a full house to win, then you have four outs--the two remaining cards of each rank that you hold.

It is important to note that the hidden cards of one's opponents may affect your calculation of outs. For example, assume that a Texas hold 'em board looks like this after the third round: 5♠ K♦ 7♦ J♠, and that you are holding A♦ 10♦. Your current hand is nothing but A-high no pair, which is not likely to win unimproved, so you have a drawing hand. How many outs you have, however, depends on what your opponent holds. You have a minimum of nine outs for certain, called nut outs, because they will make your hand the best possible: those are the 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and Q of diamonds (which will give you an ace-flush with no possible better hand on the board) and the Q of clubs and hearts, which will give you an ace-high straight with no higher hand possible. The 5♦ and J♦ will also make you an ace-high flush, so those are possible outs since they give you a hand that is likely to win, but they also make it possible for another player to have a full house (if he has something like K♠ K♣, for example). Likewise, the Q♠ will fill your ace-high straight, but will also make it possible for some opponent to have a spade flush. It is possible that your opponent could have as little as something like 7♣ 9♣ (making a pair of sevens); in this case even catching any of the three remaining aces or tens will give you a pair to beat his, so those are even more potential outs. So you have nine guaranteed outs, and possibly as many as 18, depending on what you expect your opponent to have.

The Closet

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The slang term "being in the closet" has been used to describe keeping secret one's sexual behaviors or orientation disapproved of by society; typically homosexuality, bisexuality, or transgenderism, but also including various paraphilias.

A "closeted" person originally referred only to lesbians, gays and bisexuals who kept their sexual orientation secret. The reason is usually that the person does not want to face the environment's homophobia. In many places in the world, coming out of the closet means losing your job, home, family, friends, religious and political memberships. There is often also a real risk of being the victim of violent hate crime.

The term is derived from the metaphor of the "skeleton in the closet": a thing a person hides that they don't want to be found, but which is inevitably stumbled across. This often refers to a person's past love affairs and the like. In a homophobic society, homosexuality is understandably such a skeleton, and is therefore closeted. Use of the closet without skeletal embellishment is almost universally reserved for the gay community.

Coming out of the closet describes voluntarily making public one's sexual behaviors or orientation, "being out" to not concealing one's sexual behaviors or orientation, and "outing" for making public the sexual behaviors or orientation of another who would prefer to keep this information secret.

Many people who identify themselves as homosexual, or who might prefer homosexual activities or relationships, have engaged in heterosexual activities or even have long-term heterosexual relationships. Such "heterosexual" behavior by people who would otherwise be homosexual has often been part of being "in the closet", and may be becoming less common as acceptance of homosexuality increases.

Coming out has an etiquette of its own, developed through the experiences of people who did it in a way they later decided was inappropriate and more stressful than it had to be.

Coming out is often a gradual process. It is common to come out first to a trusted friend or family member, and wait to come out to others. Some people are "out" at work but not to their families, or vice-versa. A person might say "I'm out at work, but I'm not out to my family".

Not surprisingly, some studies have found that the degree to which a person can be "out" in a large number of life situations seems to strongly correlate with lack of stress and freedom from neurosis.

Today more homosexuals than ever are "out", and their general belief is that being in the closet is unhealthy for the individual. A common saying is, "Closets are for clothes". One major gay magazine is titled Out Magazine.

External links

The term closet has also been used, seriously or not, to refer to other personal preferences; e.g. "John Doe is a closet postmodernist, communist, liberal, etc."; likewise for to come out of the closet, e.g. "John came out of the closet about his gambling addiction"; "Janice came out of the closet when she told everyone she secretly loved chocolate."

One use of this is in a concept called "The Broom Closet," that refers to people who hide the fact that they are followers of the Wiccan religion for fear of social rejection and reprisals.

Activists for Wicca and general religious freedom and tolerance stress that the same problem of the regular Closet concept also applies to the variant and encourage people to come out for the same reasons.
