Bible | Goliath great. (1.) A famous giant of Gath, who for forty days openly defied the armies of Israel, but was at length slain by David with a stone from a sling (1 Sam. 17:4). He was probably descended from the Rephaim who found refuge among the Philistines after they were dispersed by the Ammonites (Deut. 2:20, 21). His height was "six cubits and a span," which, taking the cubit at 21 inches, is equal to 10 1/2 feet. David cut off his head (1 Sam. 17:51) and brought it to Jerusalem, while he hung the armour which he took from him in his tent. His sword was preserved at Nob as a religious trophy (21:9). David's victory over Goliath was the turning point in his life. He came into public notice now as the deliverer of Israel and the chief among Saul's men of war (18:5), and the devoted friend of Jonathan. (2.) In 2 Sam. 21:19 there is another giant of the same name mentioned as slain by Elhanan. The staff of his apear "was like a weaver's beam." The Authorized Version interpolates the words "the brother of" from 1 Chr. 20:5, where this giant is called Lahmi. Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary. |

Goliath is a Biblical giant slain by David. He is also a Marvel superhero.
Goliath of Gath
Goliath of Gath ("Golyat" in Hebrew) was a gigantic figure in the Biblical story of David in the Book of Samuel I in the Old Testament. He came from Gath, one of five ancient city-states of the Philistines, which was opposed to Israel at the time. Scripture describes how David, as a young man without military training, volunteered to defend the honor of G-d and Israel by fighting Goliath in a match to the death. Goliath, a national battle hero, was fully armored and quite willing to destroy little David. David slung a single stone which either killed or rendered Goliath unconscious. David then decapitated Goliath with Goliath's own sword. According to the Midrash, Goliath was killed by the stone from the sling which miraculously penetrated his forehead. David and Goliath shared ancestry, David's great-great-grandmother being the Moabite Ruth who was the sister of Orpah, the forebear of Goliath

The name has been used elsewhere for various pieces of software, large machinery (for example, a crane on the Clyde in Scotland), a frog (Conraua goliath), the Goliath Beetle and any situation featuring unequal competing groups.
Although Goliath is generally known as a 'giant' of the Bible, actual careful reading of the scripture in the original Hebrew clearly shows a detailed description of the height and size of Goliath. He was a giant of a man, perhaps eight to eight and half feet tall, but no mythical "giant" of lore

Goliath the superhero
Dr Pym is a founding member of The Avengers, a Marvel superhero group. But before that, Dr Henry 'Hank' Pym was married to a hungarian called Maria Travonoya. Sadly, their marriage was cut short when Maria was killed by Hungarian Secret Police. Shortly after that, he discovered what he called Pym Particles. One had the power to make things shrink and the other would return it to it's natural size. He tested them on himself and he shrunk down to the size of an insect. He then restored himself. He then constructed a cyber-helmet, that would let him communicate and control insects. He designed a costume and gave himself the superhero name Ant-Man. On his first outing as Ant-Man, he defeated some KGB agents that were trying to steal some anti-radiation gas that Pym had made. He started a career as Ant-Man and fought many villains. Pym was contacted by Vernon Van Dyne. He was asked to help Van Dyne in contacting aliens. He refused, but became attracted to Vernon's daughter, Janet Van Dyne (later The Wasp). Vernon Van Dyne was later slain by an alien outlaw. Janet asked for Hank's help to avenge his death. Pym then revealed his secret identity to her. Hank used some Pym particles on her and grafted wasp wings beneath her shoulders (but they disappeared when she was normal size and came back again when using Pym particles). Janet assumed the name of The Wasp. They tracked down and defeated Vernon's killer. They then formed a permanent partnership and became the founding members of The Avengers. Over the years, Pym has had a number of different costumed identities, such as Giant-Man, Yellowjacket and most recently Goliath.
Golaith is also a gargoyle in Gargoyles, the TV show.
